WEST VILLAGE, THE MCKINNEY AVENUE TRANSIT AUTHORITY,
& THE YOUNG ARCHITECTS FORUM
PRESENT:

THE WEST VILLAGE TROLLEY DESIGN COMPETITION

In the heart of Uptown lies a genuine in-town neighborhood catering to the urban dwellers of Dallas. This is a place where bustling cafes, restaurants and lounges spill onto the streets. Sidewalks lined with trees accommodate the strolling shoppers. The classic American architecture offers a creative-edge and an enduring spirit. West Village is an evolving, walkable shopping and dining district.
You’ll find West Village at the intersection of Lemmon and McKinney Avenues, just one mile north of Downtown Dallas. With direct access to the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), the McKinney Avenue trolley and the Katy Trail hike and bike trail, West Village has become one of Dallas’ most accessible locations. The McKinney Avenue trolley is an intricate part of this accessibility.

Currently there are three trolley stops at West Village consisting of nothing more than a sign and a pole. Owners and representatives of West Village feel that the implementation of trolley rest stops at West Village will easily identify these stops, while providing convenience and shelter for waiting passengers.
McKinney Avenue Transit Authority (MATA), a non-profit organization, operates the M-line Streetcar line, a fleet of preserved historic trolley cars that cover a 3.5 mile route connecting downtown Dallas to the Uptown neighborhood. The most northern part of this route is West Village.

West Village has partnered with the Dallas chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to coordinate an architectural design competition for the trolley rest stops at West Village in order to increase rider-ability, as well as, help celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the McKinney Avenue trolley.

Registration must be completed by September 4th, and design submissions are requested no later than September 10th. Following the submission deadline, designs will be judged, and an overall best in show winner will be chosen. The best in show winner will be rewarded with recognition on the implemented trolley rest stop, $500 in West Village gift certificates, and the opportunity to submit a proposal for architectural services to West Village. There will also be a best design recognized in three different categories including intern design, license architect design, and student design. Best designs selected in these categories will be rewarded with $200 West Village gift certificates. All semi-finalists, best design winners, and the best in show winner will be recognized at an award reception at West Village.
